What a great question! I've been interested in politics since I was a teenager. I used to love to watch all the foreign correspondents' reports at the start of the New Year. I also loved the idea of going to different countries and learning about the different cultures so my first dream was to become a foreign correspondent. From there I wanted to become a Foreign Policy adviser. Does that qualify for being interested in politics. I suppose in a global sense it does.

I couldn't tell you. Seems like I was always involved somehow.

I was one of a dozen students who started a lawsuit against the school district for discrimination. If you were mormon and took a study class, you got credit for it. But if you were, say, a southern baptist or a catholic, and took the study class. No credit for you. It also doubled as a college credit too. Our graduation ceremonies included several mormon prayers. I had a teacher try to fail me because I refused to read mormon literature in my american history class. Granted, the first book in the series dealt with the mormon perspective of the move west, but the second book was straight fiction and started off with a visit from an angel. I think growing up in an very strict mormon controlled town and seeing how they treated those who didn't practice their faith.

I saw a 15 year old mormon girl accuse her non-mormon uncle of rape. Even with 150 witnesses and video evidence showing that her tale was just a fantasy, the prosecutor still went forward with it. It came out at the trial, she was angry because her uncle didn't loan her $50 to go to the movies with her friends. The supposed "rape" happened at a 4th of July 10k fun-run just minutes before the start of the event.

I saw a 16 year old mentally handicapped boy, who had been phyically abused since he was 2 years old by his stepfather, get convicted for murder when he finally killed his stepfather in SELF DEFENSE. The boy had run away, told teachers, told the police officers who found him, about the repeated beatings and rapes. They even had medical reports backing the kids story up. But no one did anything. Why? Because his stepfather was an elder in the church.

My cousin was killed by her boyfriend when she tried to leave him. While on bail awaiting the trial, he broke into a house and raped a 13 year old classmate of mine. Afterwards, he stole a big screen tv, computer, and the new car. And for all that, he was out of prison BEFORE I graduated school.

I think it was seeing all this injustice spurred something in me.

When I became aware of all the suffering the true Americans had to endure. Even now. Everyone else wants restitution.I say all the lands be given back to the north Americans Indians. No one else here deserves anything. When the Indians get restitution, then maybe politics can began too work for others who believe they are entitled to handouts.

John Kennedy vs. Richard Nixon in 1960. After Nixon's "Checker's" speech in 1956, the choice was a no brainer for me. Then JFK was assassinated, then MLK, then Bobby. Since then, I lost my compassion for politics. And since then, we got Nixon ( how did that happen ) , Ford was placed into office, Carter was the better of two evils in 1976, then Reagan, a movie actor, was the better of two evils in 1980. Then we got Daddy Bush for four years, then Clinton for eight, and now Junior Bush for eight. Isn't there someone out there worth a **** anymore. Money and power, and our next prez will be Jeb Bush???????

I got interested in politics as soon as Bush the moron came to power. His artful deceit of the american people made amusing reading(like a joker in a circus). His coined frases like "Islamic fascists" etc and his "super intelligence agencies" made me realise that "the land of the free" was being governed by morons and war mongers. Its amazing that the world looks up to american presidents for world affairs. I think this has already started to change ie France does not follow american policies blindly. Other countries will follow suite.

My first real interest, despite being a child of the sixties and participating in lots of marches, boycotts, fasts, sit-ins, and a riot or two, came when the presidential election of 2000 was thrown into the purview of the US Supreme Court.

This was a complete travesty of justice, and completely opposite of what our Constitution requires for separation of duties and balance of power between the branches of our government. The USSC should have NOTHING to do with deciding a presidential election, NOTHING. In this case, there were unforgivable shenanigans with tallying votes, especially in Florida, and worse, the election was given to the wrong candidate.

I woke up much too late, though. We had a nice country while it lasted. :-(

I was fortunate when I was growing up in that my parents had friends from the 3 main political parties in Queensland - so I learned quickly the differences in their policies and roles. I was encouraged to take an intersete and express my opinions.

Unfortunately, it's made me rather cynical about politics and politicians.
