I keep hearing that we are at war so this or that or the other thing is justified. But I thought only Congress could declare war. Did they? If so, when?

We are not "at war" in the legal sense of the word. You are correct, only Congress can declare war, and as of yesterday they hadn't.

If someone tries to tell you that we are at war, have them cite the specific Public Law where the war was declared. It's not there.

The president can make a declaration of war but congress has to ratify the decision. No declaration was made even though Bush continuously calls this a "War on Terror".

Since the "Korean Conflict" the congress has gradually alllowed the executive to take the lead in military offensives. There is no official declaration of war in place today; just a very accurate simulation?

apparently none of you were around in 1941. The USA never declared war on Germany. Roosevelt in a speech to congress declared war on the Japanese. We never declared war when we were in Viet Nam. We never declared war on North Korea.
What is this bull@hit anyway about declaring war? You go in and clobber them and then declare the peace.

it's called police action...war is not officially declared, but the president still calls for military action. it's an "unofficial" war in the sense that it is never legally declared. but...come on, it's a war in every other sense of the word.

it's alittle tricky.
they authorized the use of force. but they did not declare war.

besides, can you be at war with an abstract term like terror.
terror isn't a nation state that can ever declare surrender or sign a peace treaty. it is a tatitic that has always exsisted.

we call our terror shock and awe.

the war on terror is like the war on drugs...remember how successful we won the war on drugs? really?

Actually since this president took office for the first time we've been in several wars. First it was the war on terror, then there was the war with Iraq and now it's a war on Islamic fascists.
Gee, 1985 anyone.

We aren't officially at "war," per se, but you try telling that to the thousands of soldiers still fighting in Afganistan and Iraq.

You are worrying and quibbling about declarations while the Radical Islamic Facists are concerning themselves with how to attack and destroy us. They call Israel the little Satan, and they call the USA the great Satan. They know that to achieve their goals they have to destroy us. Then they can just keep picking other countries off one by one. Appeasers will be the death of freedom.
