Hi,
That's because you are on Windows XP Professional, or Windows XP Home edition. When you first tried signing it after you installed, it must have gone through some wizard, where you gave out your MSN Messenger address and password. The wizard also ask to associate your account to Windows .NET logon, and you kept the check ticked. However the messages you see is from Windows Messenger. An inbuilt Messenger service provided by Microsoft. Since you wont see Messenger icon in the taskbar it is running in the background.
Click on Start>Programs(All Programs) and run Windows Messenger. You will notice it to be singed in.
Hope that answers.

Under the MSN option, the is a choice to start the MSN Messenger upon starting the computer. If option to remember id and pwd is also selected, then when you powered up the PC, it will automatically login to the MSN Messenger.
Go to the option menu and disable the "Start MSN when window start"

Some times in Windows when you close the application that will close the UI part alone and the application will be running as service/process in background.
you sister might have tryed to close the messenger and that might have closed only the UI of messenger and the actual messenger will be running in background as process.
You can go and see in windows Task manager the msnmgr.exe is still running and you can terminate that process from Task manager
