Punishment comes from outside.
Discipline is staying with a course of study while knowing that one's heart is breaking and he wants to wander in the hills.

Absolutely vital for learning and having some kind of order in society. Something that should start at a young age showing that you love or care for some one enough to teach them between right and wrong and how to be a helper rather than a burden.

There is discipline in our daily lives, at least the fear of it. It is that fear that makes us obey the traffic laws on our way to work. It is the reason that little Billy in his 2nd grade class keeps his hands to himself. Discipline is an important tool in any society.

It depends whom you are disciplining and what age range. There are appropriate discipline for different age ranges. Depending on how much the child understands, weather he/she understands the consequences of his/her actions and maturity level.
