I've been having trouble with my sleeping lately. About every 3 hours or so, I wake to use the bathroom. I was reading a book on sleeping problems and, though it wasn't specific, I read that the brief moments of being awake really interrupt the sleep process. Can anyone tell me if waking this often to use the bathroom is too much and if it could be affecting my sleep? Sorry about the personal question, but thank you.

It depends on how you feel. It could just be a phase - because you are sleeping lighter you are more aware of the sensation of needing to use the bathroom. You did not mention whether you drink anything late at night. Try to quit drinking liquids an hour or two before bed - - - and do some deep breathing or stretching to get yourself relaxed and ready for bed. It could simply be that you are drinking to much water late at night and this is waking you up and making you sleep poorly. . . sometimes the simplest answer is the correct one! Its cheaper to try this first then to spend the money on a Dr. (unless its really neccisary)

Yes it is too often. I think you should be more worried about your prostate than your sleep issue. That is a common symptom of enlarged prostate. My father in law was diagnosed with prostate cancer 2 years ago and had similar problems to yours for about 15 years. Get it checked out with a doc. Better safe than sorry.

It could affect your sleep. It really depends if you get back to sleep right away and if you wake up in the middle of a sleep cycle. If the timing is right, you will barely remember getting up and it causes minimal disruption. Try to not turn on any lights while you are up and adjust your schedule and diet to try and eliminate the late night eliminations.

See your doctor. It might be a sign of a weak bladder, or even an enlarged prostate. This is a common malady in men, especially in the mid years of life. He/she will want to examine you to rule out diseases or other disorders. Good luck.

How old are you? It could be an enlarged prostate, which will cause you to wake up several times a night to go to the toilet.
