I don't use my front load machine to soak for it uses way to little water to cover the "whatever I am needing to soak". I simply use a pail... when done soaking, I pour it in the machine and run the reg. cycle for the type of material needed. : )

Since my front loader (Kenmore) uses so little water, if I needed to soak anything (which is rare - kids grown up!!) I'd use a bucket or tub. However, I know that if I wanted to, I can turn off the wash cycle once the water is in the washer just by pulling out on the control knob. The wash cycle will then stop until I push the control knob in again. I don't know if there would be enough water to really soak the clothes though.
I hope this helps.

Like others have said, you can stop the machine mid-cycle. I usually only have one or 2 items to soak, so I have a cheap plastic dishtub that I keep in my laundry area for soaking items. When I'm ready to wash, I dump the contents into the washer and rinse out the dishtub.

If you mean a commercial machine, in a laundromat, you're probably out of luck.
But if it's a home machine, there ought to be a knob to interrupt the cycle, push in or pull out to stop it, and come back when you want it to start again, and set the knob so it will.
I have a top loader, and that works for me, I hope front loaders are not all that completely different that there is no such way to do it.

if it's a home washing maching I would say let it fill with water then turn it off. turn it back on when you are done soaking.
