First I have two PC's, on one I installed the Debian 3.1 Linux,(Only the first CD) It boots and works. I only see a prompt where it tells me to login, I can login as Root, or my name. I know there has to be more,,, I am very knowledgable with windows. However I am lost with this. What else do I need to DL to get this to work? or how do I start it to see somekind of desktop? (also I have a Belkin USB adapter, thats using my buddys network, that I would like to hook up to linux). (if I need to DL anything, I need links, And free stuff only as thats why I am trying Linux its free).

Debian is probably not the best Linux distribution to learn on if you've never had any Linux or Unix exposure. I'd suggest you download a "Live CD" distribution like Knoppix or Ubuntu just to get a feel for what can be done, and to see whether or not your hardware will work (for example, it's quite possible that your USB network adaptor won't work). If you decide you like the distro on the live CD, you can install to the hard drive from the CD.

If you install only the first CD, then would assume that you do not have any GUI. Can you see any windiw-like screen with s 'START' button at the to left corner?

If no, I would suggest u go and download the netinst image from the debian website. This is the basic installation. Once you run this, you will be able to connect to internet and download the rest of the debian packages. Remember to select the "desktop Environment" as this give you the Window-like environment to work with. However, you need network card and a internet connection for this.

You will also have to check if the Belkin USB adapter have any driver for Linux. Mine is a Creative USB Adapter, and it does not have linux support.

Enjoy your debian. :)

I agree with toddos, Debian is not the best Linux distribution to learn on.

I recommend Kubuntu (http://www.kubuntu.org). This is very similar to Ubuntu, which toddos recommended, except that it uses a different, more windows-like desktop enviroment (KDE instead of Gnome).

Simply download the ISO file (there is only 1 CD needed), burn to CD then boot up from it. That will allow you to run Linux and the desktop enviroment from the CD, and you can get a feel for it before deciding to install.

When you're ready to install, simply run the "Install" icon from the desktop and follow the wizard.

Kubuntu cannot open proprietary media formats such as MP3s out of the box, but all you need to do is go to http://easyubuntu.freecontrib.org/get.html and type the 4 instructions in the first box into a console window in Kubuntu.

Have fun!

When you boot, login under Root, find the hard drive, Mount..

Pop up the start panel, ( Bottom Left ) there is all the controls, the start up ( Boot ) should load all recognized hardware and software that is compatible, Remember Linux of all types are mostly open source, so some windows apps and programs may not be compatible, this site should help you immensely. Good Luck
