As the others stated the tape is blue to differentiate the paint on the wall because usually the paint are lighter hue and the blue tape will be easier to spot. HOWEVER, keep in mind that painters use up to 3 different color tapes, each with a specific strength of adhesion. Light almond tape having the strongest adhesion, Blue Painter's Tape having mid range adhesion and orange tape having the lightest strength of adhesion using different adhesion strengths is used for purposes of not lifting fresh paint to wanting tape to stick well to other surfaces where a lesser adhesion strength would not work. Hope's this helps!!

Tape that is used for painting has special properties that prevent paint from "leaking" under neath the tape. When paint makes its way under the tape it bleeds and therefore you don't get a neat and finish. So to tell the difference between masking tape and painters tape they are different colours.

If it were white or tan tape you probably could`nt see it as well as blue tape when you paint a white wall and most of your walls are white...that`s the only thing I could think of....

Painter's tape is only sticky for a few days. I suppose they color it blue to differentiate it by site.

Because painting is such a depressing chore.

Not really. I heard it was blue because the most comman paint color used for interior residential space is white. In general, I think it is just easier to see the deliniation line.
