This computer has window-XP operating system, is connected to cable modem through a Linksys router (802.11b). The other computer, running window98, connected to same router continues to work, although it is older and is slow

Call 1-800- GEEK SQUAD lol. The best buy people. Another thing you can do is go to start-->run-->type "cmd"---> then in the command prompt (black box) type "ipconfig/release" than once everything turns to 0.00.00 or something like that type "ipconfig/renew" this will refresh or renew your ip address so any problems with it shall be fixed. If its the router thats the problem try consulting Linksys or go to there site www.linksys.com they should have support on there site. If you can try updating your firmware on your router.

Try using a new cable to connect with your router. There may be a loose wire or contact in the cable you are using.
