I have been hypnotised about 3-4 times to stop smoking. The form of hypnotism they used didnt make me sleepy at all, it was more of a deep form of meditation, relaxation... So i was totally aware of what was happening & I could come out of it straight away, & I could hear what he was saying.

I am not sure if the type of hypnotism they do on stage where they make you act like a chicken is different? I spoke to my hypnotherapist about it & he said that they choose people who would be more suseptable to hypnotism so they are sure that they're tricks actually work.

One thing you call do is call up a local hypnotist, or the one who is hypnotising you next week & have a chat to them?

In its true state, it knows this is nothing more than focused attention. You've been hypnotized before and not even know it. When you drive yourself to work and don't remember the trip that's an informal form of hypnosis. It's nothing to worry about and you won't do anything that you really don't want to. Believe me I've done six papers on this topic and I have been hypnotized the number of times including for dental work. It's no big deal. In situations like you're describing, as a parlor trick, most people are just pretending to conform to the environment and aren't really hypnotized anyway. People are just trying to do what they think they should act like under those circumstances. Don't worry about it. Only about 10% of the population is really in the right place to be hypnotized anyway. Just do what you feel like and don't worry about the rest of it. It has nothing to do with being sleepy. The only real danger is when people use it to rationalize as some sort of an excuse to do something they shouldn't anyway. Usually these people have underlying psychological difficulties and are just looking for an excuse to misbehave or to follow their already chronic behavior.

Being hypnotized can be a very dangerous thing. Stage hypnotists would disagree with me. But it all depends upon who exactly you are.. You might have certain emotional susceptibilities and then you might not. If you have them, getting hypnotized could trigger them off. Amateurs should not be fooling around with hypnosis because they really don't know what they are doing. Hypnosis should only be done by trained professionals such as doctors or psychologists, if it is done at all. One woman I know of that was repeatedly hypnotized went crazy and spent 1000's of dollars going to therapists trying to get well.
My advice is, don't take foolish chances in this area. Don't do it.

I have been hypnotized and I have hypnotized others

As far as reactions? you get out no more or less than you take in
that is...if you are nervous, apprehensive...you probably won't be responsive enough or trusting enough to let yourself go under
It really is a trust issue...
If you are open minded, there is very little to be afraid of..
most times, these induced states are very weak ...
Theatrical, humorous, embarrassing behaviors...maybe
that's the initiation thing..the sorority thing...the entertainment thing.

The sensation is more akin to the feeling that you have when you awaken ...but are not quite functional ....
kind of a semi-conscious state, semi-sleep state
quite akin to a deep meditative state..

it's a mind game of sorts
if the hypnotist asks, suggests, tells you to do something that you don't want to do...the usual reaction is that you will immediately snap yourself out of the hypnotic state..you won't do what you normally wouldn't do...
that kind of suggestion violates the "unconscious" or "subconscious" or "subdued consciousness" state...you simply don't want to play the game any more....

You are conscious of everything that is going on around you...the movie/TV zombie-like image is absolutely wrong..it just doesn't happen that way...
Actually, since the hypnotic state is a semi-sleep state...you probably will feel more rested and relaxed afterwards than after a night's sleep. I had a group of "regulars" that I would hypnotize the night before a big exam...just for the extra restful sleep it gave them

More often than not...the suggestions are made to be entertaining to the audience...so , if you go ahead with the "thing" if you feel like it...the worst experience you might take away from it is embarassment....clucking like a chicken...acting like a baby...eating an onion...you know...stupid human tricks...

"corky" did bring up an important issue
borderline paranoid/schizophrenics..those with serious psychological issues..psychotic/neurotic/bipolar disorders...STAY AWAY-and that assumes that you know that you have these issues...heaven help you if you do but are not yet aware of them.....
it's that trust issue again
.if your perception of reality is skewed to begin with...and the only contact with reality you have is the hypnotist...and you really don't trust him/her either....you are likely to suffer a serious psychological, psychiatric breakdown.
However...the likelihood that such a person would allow themselves to participate, to allow themselves to go under, is fairly remote..but be warned...if it looks like someone is freaking out...don't go on with the show...stop immediately...snap him/her out of it...the hypnotist must..must...must maintain a calm, soothing voice to bring the subject out without further stress

It's no big deal. First thing you need to know is that you cannot be hypnotised unless you allow yourself to be. Second thing is that, when you're under hypnosis, you are only aware of what the hypnotiser chooses to let you become aware of. It's not scary, in fact it's pretty cool. If you've ever meditated, you get the same effect when you come out. Some psychologists and social workers use hypnosis in some of their treatments because the effect is totally natural.

I think it's pretty cool. There is nothing to worry about. Feeling nervous is about right for someone about to get hypnotized for the first time. Good Luck!
