I would take a look at the various websites of the great art museums, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC, the Louvre in Paris, Hermitage in Russia, The British Museum and the Tate Gallery in London, The Uffizi Gallery in Florence and the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC. It will give you an idea of some of the important painters and paintings. I would also suggest you finding some "history of art" book in an online collection at the library ( I know the NYC public library has "e-ditions" that you access and read online rather than having a physical book). That would give you the best sense of what is important. I can't believe that you don't have a book or some guidelines for this class - maybe you could share with one of your classmates?
