There was a terrible curse on that ring which Dumbledore was wearing is also one of Voldemort's hocruxes. The curse burned his hand and could have killed him if Snape hadn't acted in time.

Dumbledore's hand being black had to do with the horcrux like another person said, but it's really a very clever use of foreshadowing in the book before he dies.

Yes. The first one Dumbledore went out and got before hogwarts when he was too busy to see harry all the time. He said he went out and got the ringThat had the horcruxes in it. Thats what happend to his hand. Then the person he got the ring from died they talked about it on the way up the mountain. Harrys first hunt. lol

Dumbledore's hand was black because of the ring Horcrux. Dumbledore told Harry that it had a terrible curse on it and between his own skill and Snape's help he'd managed to limit the damage. (HBP, pg.503)

He never explains it, but I have a theory. Remember how, early in the book, Dumbledore shows up at the Weasley's and warns them that the deatheaters have found out how to duplicate other people. It seemed important at the time, but it was never mentioned again, even to Harry. I think that the "Dumbledore" in the book is actually Wormtail--remember that his hand was made of silver? Maybe there were more problems duplicating his hand because it wasn't made of flesh. So Dumbledore may not have really died--it may have been Wormtail who was killed, instead.

Sadly, in Book 7, it is revealed that he simply ran out of toilet paper. Obviously not glamorous...but you will understand why this happened when you read Book 8. I don't want to give the rest of the plot away. Hope this helps.
