At first, you should go to another doctor, to find you a good treatment and maybe to make some exams...
But if you cough repeatedly, and like in "sets" of 8 coughs per time... that is called Paroxistic Cough and is usually associated to some bacterial infections of the respiratory tract (one of them is Mycoplasma Pneumoniae) and it does not dissapear until you take good antibiotics.. as I dont know what you are taking I can't tell you, and you don't say if your cough is dry or productive... So i'm not giving you a diagnostic (and is not the idea, because it can go from an allergy to pneumonia and the treatmens are completely different) but my advice is to visit another doctor and ask him to make you an order for exams, and change your prescription (and if he gives you antibiotics take them all the days that is necessary and don't stop only because you feel ok, because infections usually come back).
In the mean time, drink lots of water (two liters per day), and try with candies to make your throat a little softer, also, avoid temperature changes (going from a hot place to a cold one), also too cold places, avoid doing exercise in contaminated areas, and to help the doctor to make a diagnose, try to write down in what cases your cough is worse (when you are out of home, when you are outside, when you walk, when you sleep...)
Take care and never forget that the inet is just a help, and visiting a -good- doctor is irreplaceable.

What did the Dr. say was causing the cough? Prescriptions aren't going to help with a regular cold. However, if you have bronchitis, or something like that, smoking will trigger it, or being around second hand smoke. I smoke, so am not preaching against it. I suffer from frequent bronchitis because of it. Maybe someday I will stop, I hope it is before I develope emphezemia or something. Dr. already says it is COPD, and I think that covers a range of symptoms, also including asthma.

It may be that you are allergic with something you've eaten or are you taking any meds.

I can recall having coughed for 6 weeks due to meds.
