I just got sick and vomited blood. I live by myself and am scared to go to sleep. Should I go to the emergency room? What could it be?

Obviously your not in alot of pain or you would be at the ER. Sounds like a bleeding ulcer.

Well, with your additional detail s HE ONLY HAD A TEASPOON of BLOOD, all you people can calm down about going to the ER!!! You never said if you were or still are a smoker. The fiberglass in many mentholated ciggarettes can cause small amouts of blood to show up in you r spit and vomit. And thats a normal thing.

R U having any stomach dicomfort?

Blood in vomit ~

Bright red streaks of blood in the vomit can be caused by irritation of the mouth or nose from vomiting. This is not serious if there is only a small streak of blood that you are quite sure came from your mouth or nose. A moderate to large amount of blood in vomit indicates bleeding in the digestive tract usually from the esophagus, stomach, or upper part of the small intestine

Digestive tract bleeding can be caused by inflammation, peptic ulcer disease, gastritis, or tears in the esophagus. If bleeding is severe, the vomit will be mostly blood or material that looks like coffee grounds.

Call your doctor right away if you have more than a small streak of blood in your vomit or if you are not sure the blood came from your mouth or nose.

It could be nothing at all. Unless you vomited large amounts of bright red blood, don't sweat it tonight. If you feel alright otherwise, you may have just ruptured small blood vessels while vomiting. I suggest you see a doctor in the next couple of days though. It could be a sign of an ulcer of other things but I think that you will be ok tonight. Otherwise you will spend hours in the ER for them to tell you to go home and follow up with your doctor.

P.S. Since everyone else is scaring you here, call your doctor tonight and ask to speak to the on call doctor and tell him what is going on.

Aside from everyone trying to scare you, I think you should just go to your doctor as a soon as possible (no need for a hospital visit unless you're in pain or this has happened more than once for a consecutive number of instances).

Most likely it's nothing serious, but something like that should still be taken seriously. Just to be save try and write everything that happened down, so when you do see a doctor you don't leave anything out.

If you can't get to your doctor right away, go to a drop in clinic!

If you have been throwing up for a while and now some blood came up,it could be from retching. If you threw up more than a teaspoon,go to the ER just to stay on the safe side.

Could be lots of things....I agree that you should go to the ER. Was it a lot of blood? How many times? Is there alcohol involved? Do you have a history of bleeding ulcers? The answer could lie in your answer to those questions....but at any rate, I think you should definitely take a trip into the ER. Hope ya feel better.

"Be scared/go to the ER or calm down/don't go. I don't know why anyone hasn't told you to just call the ER (or "ask a nurse" if available in ur area) They will ask you some questions and let you know. And you will be speaking to either a Doctor or a RN. It only takes a phone call. Call your hospital, and ask the admitting/reception clerk for the ER. Its that easy!

Yes, absolutely! The color of the blood you vomited is important so make sure and tell the ER staff what it looked like. Call and ask a friend to take you please, that way you get there safely. Take care of you....
