Tension. Both the tension of doing it, and the tension of worrying about "here comes the hard part."

Probably because if the strain on your vocal chords.
Personally, when I hear someone singing with vibrato, it makes me cringe.

Frustrating, isn't it?

i was in choir, so I know what you mean.

When singing in a natural octave range, your vocal cords are relaxed, and have room to "quiver", adding that vibrato.

The more you strain to reach a high or low note, the cords constrict more, and thus, with less room, no vibrato.

However, with practice, you can "stretch" the cords out and become more comfortable with a versatile range.

Good luck!

A vibrato requires that your vocal cords are somewhat relaxed. If you're straining to hit a note, they're not relaxed, they're likely very taut.

Pretty typical...
