Why don't you open your "task manager", Ctrl, Alt, Dlt. and see all the processes that are running along with the CPU resources each process is using.
You say, "I have all the anti-crap software on my comp". Perhaps that is your problem you are running to many anti-crap software that uses very high CPU resources.
Check out your task manager and see what you can remove.
Get rid of the ones that are eating up all your CPU resources.
I test or use only antispyware, antivirus program that state in their website that they are very low on CPU resources. If they lied I remove them for something better.
A real good program is Ewido. www.ewido.net It is from Prague an is not free, but if you don't purchase in 30 days it will only remove the guard in the tray and the automatic download that come almost every hours on the hours. Very low on resources and scans your registry, memory and files. Scans 139,000 files I have.
Another program that is free and not bad on CPU resources is:
www.superantispyware.com Scans as the above all files you have in your system.
If you know that you are low on RAM, go to www.majorgeeks.com and look for memory on the left side of the webpage. Click and you will find lots of free memory software that you can use to increase your RAM. (One good one start with "X" something that is for Windows XP Home or Prof., if that is your platform.).
Hope I have helped you.

You more then likely have a run away process. Go into your task manager, and check out whats taking up your cpu. If you know what the process is and what it does, you could probably end the process. If you dont know what it is or what it does, look it up on the internet. It could be a system process which is needed to run your computer.

Leaving PC on is only burning electricity. The more software the CPU is running, the slower it runs for each application.

It could be one of many things, but my first guess is that it is overheating.
Make sure that the vents on your PC are free and clear and that your CPU fan isn't caked with dust.
