When I first joined gmail a long time ago, I only had 10 invites. I used a few of them right away and decided to save the rest.
It turns out that within a few months, the number of invitations I had left went up to 25. There was no warning, I just noticed it one day. I used a few more invites, and today, I have 50.
Google doesn't seem to put too much stock into the invites, since there is no way to control or prevent someone from opening many accounts (like it was suggested above). The concept behind invites isn't to restrict who YOU are allowed to invite, but to help slow the process of dummy accounts being setup that take up many gigabytes of space on their servers.
Personally, I think it was mostly a marketing ploy to draw attention to their new email service. Don't get me wrong, I think it's great. However, the feeling that you're being "invited" is what gets users excited about using their service.

You really just have to wait to receive the invitations. Their Help Centre says that they will only give out invites to their users when there is space available on their servers, so it takes time. One of my friends has used Gmail for a very long time, so she had 100 invites at one point.

Basically, you can't.
The other walk around is to use the current limited invitations create more accounts for more invitations. :-)
