Of course not. A girlfriend is not required of any boy. It is your duty to yourself to follow your personal dreams. A girlfriend can muck that up a bit, for sure. Be free and do what is right for you. Girls seem very needy these days, so just give a few compliments now and then like: "Those earrings are really special" or "Your hair is very flattering" or "You are really the smartest girl I ever met". That way you keep your options open for when you may want to have a girlfriend.
I think you sound very normal for a 17 year old guy which frustrates the girls immensely since they are so desperate for a relationship. If you think you need a girl for social reasons, find a smart one that can carry on a decent conversation and don't go any further than that. Since she is smart, she will appreciate it that you value her conversation and brain. You are the marrying kind and you don't even need to consider that until you are at least 25. When you meet the right one, you won't be able to be around her enough. So, just improve on yourself and do what makes you happy. When you have lots of interests and accomplishments later on, women will flock to you. Forget the needy, young girls who want to be like the stars. They make me sad.

I'm a girl and when I was 17... I knew a few boys but didn't have any really good guy friends.... If you are talking about a girlfriend... I had my first boyfriend at 19! And my friend is 23 and still hasn't found one.
But if you are not interested in girls at all.... maybe your a late bloomer or have to start asking yourself some serious questions. My little brother turned out to be gay... no big deal. But hey... if you know you are straight... you just haven't met the right person yet!

People mature at different rates and they have different interests. Maybe a girlfriend isn't your thing at the moment, you still have plenty of time, you're only 17. Or maybe you just haven't found anyone you truly liked which is still understandable.

Not necessarily. Its better not to have one so early in life. You can concentrate on studies and building your career. After you're 21-22 and started working, that's the best time to go dating and have a girlfriend.
