And anyone who picks The Exorcist should know that they added horrific subliminal pictures into the film so your subconscience would pick them up and the shocks would be more intense. so that one doesn't count cause they cheated! :)

There is a huge difference between the scariest and the most gory. When it comes to Night of the Living Dead or Texas Chainsaw Massacre or other like movies, they are not scary, they are just gory. Some the scariest that have been released: The Exorcist (which still stands the test of time and is in opinion THE BEST horror movie ever made, with Rosemary's Baby a real close second. The Shining is very creepy, Alien, The Thing (not so much scary but brilliantly suspenseful) and The Birds (again not as scary as suspenseful) and The Blair Witch Project (flame all you want but this movie was a lot scarier than other movies I've seen that are supposely the scariest, namely, The Ring, Saw, etc.)

I thought The Exorcist was a comedy? Keeps getting funnier every time I see it...
anyhoo... Thats a hard one to pick for me, scary movies are only scary the first time I see them.
Some of them give me an uneasy feeling for a while... That's how I felt for months after I saw the first Candyman in the theatre.
I couldn't walk past a mirror at night without thinking of the part with the decapitated rottweiler in the baby's crib.

Return to Oz, used to freak me out as a kid, especially when Dorothy looks at the heads in the cabinets.
The Omen (original) is still pretty creepy. There are a few scenes where i have to turn the volume down. Especially when the priest is running to the church during the storm!

The Blob. I was 9 years old when my Dad took me to see it. It was the opening movie before The Three Stooges Go to Space or something like that. I haven't slept a full night since and I am 54.

Subliminal messages don't work and even if it did I bet the movie still wouldn't be scary. But I think High Tension was the most scary. The killer is actually smart and the title speaks for itself. That movie is so disturbing, I haven't been able to bring myself to watch it again.
