When I was a cashier many years ago my money was always right except for one time when it was $19 under. My manager considered my past history and did not punish me in any way. If you do get punished you need to consider if you want to continue working for a manager that does not take your history into account.

Technically you are responsible for the shortage. Whether or not they hold you to that is up to them--- their company policy may be that you pay it no matter what your "track record" is like, or they may let it slide. Regardless of the outcome, if you're not counting your bank before you start your shift, you should request that your manager let you do that--- otherwise, you might be held responsible for a mistake that someone else made! And only one set of hands in the drawer for the shift, till you turn the money back in.

when my sister was $.39 under she was reprimanded and it was taken out of her paycheck. she was threatened that her employment would be terminated if she was ever under again and it would become part of her permanent record. fortunately she found other employment soon after that incident. i think it all depends on where you work and what their policies are and of course how reasonable management is.
