The mere fact that marijuana is illegal while tobacco and alcohol aren't doesn't suffice for the purpose of this question. I'm wondering why marijuana is illegal but tobacco and alcohol aren't when tobacco and alcohol cause so much grief and havoc.

Perhaps a related issue: Is it true that a significant reason marijuana is illegal in the U.S. is because the paper lobby was stronger than the hemp lobby?

Interesting comments about taxation and control. However, I'd think our government could easily figure out a way to regulate the marijuana industry. I think it's just been illegal for so long that it's considered taboo; no politician seriously wants to go near the issue of legalizing it.

Marijuana causes irreparable central nervous system damage.

But that's not why it's "illegal". It's illegal because more ethanol can be made per acre of hemp than any other plant in the world.

It was the influence of oil companies that made marijuana illegal as an excuse for banning hemp as an agricultural crop.

Once again . . . follow the money.

Perhaps the massive tax revenue that is generated by tobacco and alcohol has something to do with the legality of it. Not to mention the drain on the health care systems due to tobacco and alcohol related illnesses. However, politicians need to earn their salaries and massive pensions somehow.

Marijuana has been proven to be several times more toxic to the human body in some respects than either tobacco or alcohol, but it doesn't seem to matter when people prefer to choose their habits and addictions in spite of what is harmful to the mind and body. Perhaps everything should be free and available to whomever wants it. Everybody has the freedom to choose what they want. They just do not have the freedom to choose the consequences of the choices they make. That's just the way it is.

We know that tobacco will almost certainly lead to death from use, but it is acceptable because the government can predict the results of the drug. Alcohol is another drug that effects everyone in nearly the same way.

The problem with marijuana is that the results of the drug cannot be fully predicted, and effect different people differently.

Some users have different experiences using the drug that others, so the government considers it unsafe.

The alcohol and tobacco lobbies are keeping it illegal.

Anybody who has tried both knows that pot is much safer than alcohol.

You look to have spoke back your very own question... so why are you asking? Theoretically, the feds believe Marijuana is risky on the only reason that it is a 'gateway' drug, subsequently inviting human beings to apply coke, meth, different drugs, etc... Which,,, in some twisted mindframe, somebody desperate Marijuana would be leveled as in simple terms as risky as different drugs. however the completed image isn't being painted. One would desire to look on the persons and their history, and threat types, to no longer point out the belief of having/no longer having the "Addictive Gene", or in different words, the chemical stability permitting a guy or woman to alter into bodily/mentally dependant on a drug. in spite of everything, any drug would be deadly reckoning on the area, our surroundings, the guy, the human beings the guy is with/around. I smoke pot accepted, care loose. I actual have supply up chilly turkey without care approximately it, for months... and in basic terms began smoking because of the fact I had to ask myself, Why did I supply up interior the 1st place? possibly just to cleanse and detox myself... nicely, which may be carried out in approximately 2 months. yet, evaluate this. Joe is going into the liquor save to purchase a bottle of jack, and gets carded, is cool, and drives abode, to his spouse, and makes some liquids and watches.... The laptop.. inebriated... yet legitimately "ok". day after in the present day, Joe is going to his broking for some pot, and his broking has some drama occurring (unknown to Joe), and a guy busts in with a gun needing the two his money and his dope, and Joe gets hit upside the pinnacle with a 9mm. existence is unpredictable. Smoking pot would desire to be as risky as say, doing laundry... or as risky as OJ Simpson-- in spite of everything. It doesnt actual count what drug you do, it concerns how dumb the consumer is, and their theory tactics, undertaking, etc. Lindsay Lohan did coke in front of a pal of mine that danced at a club... yet hell, Lohan didnt die. you comprehend? i'd desire to bypass on... because of the fact in thought, it isnt the medicine that are risky, its the human beings using them. think of approximately that.

the widespread reinstitution of hemp growing would destroy many major corporations that rely on pushing products that hemp could replace. ... and thats the ONLY reason it is illegal in the first place .. from paper, to fuels, to oil-based products, to superior building products to replacing many plastic products ... the oil and lumber (tree products) based industries would crumble.
