It still exists. However there are two sections, one that is government run and sanctioned, much the same as MI5, ASIO, CIA, etc.
The other section is an underground criminal organisation much like the Mafia and Triads. The same animal doing the same things but with self interest as the only motive, not just one of more motives.

Old habits die hard. The privileges and clout of course died with the death of communism but a lot of the policies are still place.
The current President was a KGB man, so draw your own conclusions.
