Seeing as the arts in our public schools are completely wrecked, and recently Portland Public Schools has made it so that the class fees for art classes are not required, we need ways to raise money for the arts department. Rallying our peers support is one, but we need actual factual money... any ideas?

I am sure you have thought of this, but you also need to rally the arts community in your area. Maybe you have local artisans who have had some commercial success who would like to give back. I went to NOCCA (New Orleans Center for Creative Arts) in the late eighties and we begged for funding anywhere we could get it. We also were grateful to past graduates like Harry Connick Jr & the Marsalis family who continued to make the community aware of the important work being done there.

Contact local theatres & galleries, the Opera Guild, Ballet Association and anyplace else you can think of that would have an interest in nurturing a love of the arts in todays youth.

I know this sounds silly, but if you organized a "Run for the Arts" with the endorsement of these groups you would have a jumping off point to raise funds on a regular basis. All the society types would sign up just to wear the T-shirt----which of course would be designed by an up-and-coming artsist from the public school system. With the right sponsorship and dedication, it could be very profitable and maybe grow into more than just a run.

Until Hurricane Katrina, I lived in St. Bernard Parish just east of N.O. We had an "annual" Art in April festival that bought many in our area together with a parish (County) wide art and talent show. Small scholarships were given and it really was a great weekend long event. Hopefully, your community can do the same.

best of luck!!!!!!!!!!! Start small, but dream BIG!

I won an art award in 1975. My 8th grade graduation. I have been trying to start fundraisers with my safety products. I have Parkinson's and for some reason my family wont support my self defense web site. I have child safety alarms, bike flashers and reflective belts. I have other safety blinky lights and about a dozen or more handheld personnal alarms that are god awfully noisy and most have two rolls as a beacon light or door or window alarm for dormatories hotels etc.. I cant keep up with things and therfore my chance to find my place in the world is growing dim. I have been unemployed for a year now. I just recently had to sut my site down because, I cant explain it, my family will not save my messages, I lost lots of business and opportunities to help schools and programs raise money. This is not a sad ploy to generate business. But if the correct person was able to assist me. I am quite sure we could help a lot of school programs.

I was diagnosed finally 2 months ago something I had known for 2 years but doctors could not agree what I had. Then someone hit me on the highway. This guy was going 85 mph I was going 60 when he hit me directly in the back of my pickup. Now I have a mild brain injury that only affects short term memmory. But the Parkinsons make's me depressed because I cant move fast enough to keep up with demand.

BOTTOM LINE IS I HAVE TONS OF HIGH PROFFIT SAFETY ITEMS AND NO WAY TO REALIZE MY DREAM. I am not winning and I really dont expect any answeres. But a 10 dollar LED bike flasher kit with reflective belt and bike mount. The red light is bright and has 7 different patterns. This is just one example. each sale could be $3.25 for the school and I make about $1.30 from each one. I also have stun guns, peper spray, and much more. Sorry for the long email.

You could create an art gallery of the students' work and charge admission to get in. You also could have some live music there, or some type of performance. I'm sure if you promoted it and got the kids really motivated about showing their work it could be a success. I'm sure many of the parents, family, and friends of the kids would be thrilled about seeing their work in a gallery.

Why not have an art sell or auction of any art pieces that the kids in art classes and local artist donate.
