I think I'm wrong because I'm trying to preserve my image by not hanging out with this guy. It bothers me more every day because he's nice and I know something's wrong with me.

Your image should be the last of your concerns if you are indeed good friends, as you have given comfort and friendship which you say he lacks. Try to enlarge his world by introducing him to others

I know how you feel, I have this one guy always coming up to my dorm because he doesn't have anyone else to hang with. But the biggest problem is that he doesn't know what time it is, he just came anytime he wants and sometime I need to sleep at night.
I finally told him that he is a good guy and such, but I told him that I am my own person and that I have personal space, I can't have him follow me all the time. I have other events that I have to go to and some he can't follow.
Eventually he apologized and says that he didn't meant to be an annoyance to me.
Now, before he comes over here he calls me first.

Maybe you try introducing him to other people. Hang out in groups and get him to interact with others.

Also, if he's so nice then tell him at certain times you need some space (subtely). If he truly is your friend and not using you for your image, he should understand and restrain himeself
