I have a book full of sketches of designs for feamle clothing. I can sew well enough on a sewing maching, but im not all that good and i can only do it by looking at a pattern. How can i make my ideas into something if i dont really know how much fabric i'll need or how i can even start putting it all together. This might be a dumb question for some, but dont laugh or critize becuz we all have to start somewhere lol.

First, make yourself a dress form, with some duct tape.

Next, get some muslin (or other really cheap fabric), and practice "draping". This site is more about historical costuming, but she has really good general directions. Once you get the basic body block pattern, you can modify that to do most anything...

Find patterns that are similar in design to your sketches. You might take the bodice of one, the sleeves of another and sew them to the skirt of yet another pattern. I used to design and make all my clothing in high school. It takes some trial and error. Calculate the fabric you think you will need, and then add an extra yard just in case. Start with simple patters, basic pants and tops. Then move on to something more difficult, like collars and lapels. You might be surprised at how talented you are! And no one else will have the same outfit as you!

Sounds like you need to take some sewing, pattern making classes. You can check out any store that sells sewing machines, or even places like JoAnne's fabric shop. They teach classes so you can learn to do things properly, correctly and actually feel good wearing the clothes you make. Good luck & happy sewing!
