Yes, photography is a real career job if you want to make it one. There are a number of opportunities for photographers. News photography, of course. Every newspaper in every city has photographers on staff, and they also hire part-timers. Publicity and public relations agencies use photographers. Advertising agencies use photographers. There are specialized fields of medical photography, fashion photography, sports photography, in-house photography, and independent photographic studios.
These are all real, full time jobs. And today, they are much easier than ever before. Twenty years ago, you would also be required to run the darkroom, developing and printing pictures, but with the advent of digital photography, that has gone by the boards. But you should know how to manipulate digital images onscreen.
If you're interested, get out there and start shooting!
good luck.

yes it can be a carrer, but much depends on your talent
anyone can buy a really nice $3200.00 nikon or canon
and call him / her self a pro, but unless you have the "eye"
you won't make a living, much less be in demand. you can spend money to go to brook's institute, but even thy will not guarantee you got the talent, they can only refine it.
there are many hacks out there clicking away shots
if you can tel the difference between a pro and a hack, then you can tell what type of eye you need for color, composition ect... if you are good technically and astetically, then you probably have the eye for it. just like few pretty faces will ever be top models, so true is it with photographers.
the other thing you must have is salesmenship, you need to sell yourself and your services, you need to know how to hustle, but the hard look is to admit weather or not you can shoot good.. and that's the trick.

I've considered it. But I make too much money as a software integratin architect.
Options -
1. Newspapers (i.e. Jimmy Olsen). Do you enjoy photographing corpses/fires/misery ?
2. Freelance - same as option 1 - but less security.
3. landscape/wildlife - Ansel Adams is real famours - but I don't know if he made a bunch of money BEFORE he died.
4. Artistic photos - as for otion 3 - but even less money (i.e. none, unless a drunk rock star buys your photo of a soup can).
If you do it for a living, it ceases to be fun - I'd rather take photos for fun, than for money - AND it pays better.

you can sell your photographs, you can make albums, you can give them to: magazines, newspapers, and books. you can take pictures at parties, of pets, make calendars, take pictures of models, school photographs, and you can use photoshop, too! also, you could take pictures of weather, like hurricanes, tsunamis, and all that. it' dangerous, but it's definitely worth it! It's DEFINITELY a job!
