As long as you have good study habits, classes will take care of themselves. To survive at a school the size of Cal State LA, try this. Find one or two clubs (don't go overboard) that you are interested in and will commit yourself to. Go to the meeting, attend the events and volunteer to help with projects. These people will be the basis for the friendships you will have for years. They will anchor you and help you feel at home, rather than overwhelmed by the masses of people. This kind of connection is what you need to help you feel secure at college. That security will help you to do well with classes by buoying you up emotionally and psychologically.

1) Relax--the more stressed you are, the harder it will be to get into it.

2) Get the books, early--read the first few chapters if you can. Take notes.

3) Email your prof, if you know who it is--show interest and just open a dialogue.

4) Map out your route--you'll be glad that you did, especially at a large campus (experience: late for the first class on the first day of my first semester)

5) Don't be afraid to chat with others--one of my best friends is a gal I met in class. We just started chatting and it's great.

Good luck!

best thing is to remember this is college and not vacation away from home. it's more like work. look at it that way and it will pay off big time. screw off and you're just wasting 10s of thousands of dollars.
