I took my ranger to get an alignment and they said that the camber bolts were not factory installed. And they went ahead and did the alignment. When I took my truck elsewhere to get the camber bolts installed they said they were already there but they were badly stripped. What is the cause of this?? Could the first auto repair shop be responsible??

i agree with what these guys are saying fully, but i want to address the fault issue...its not the first shops fault, thats what they were telling u when they said the bolts were not factory, as in " we are not going to try and adjust ur camber because..." sort of thing

If the bolts were not factory installed, and the shop that did the original alignment did not have modern equipment with good software that tells you exactly where to place your bushing, then the adjustment to the front camber required loosening and tightening the bolts repeatedly with a small adjustment in between each measurement, experimenting, until the correct amount of adjustment was found. This could have worn the threads on the bolts. I have never used a cresent wrench in an alignment, nor has any good technician I know. I have spent over 50,000 bucks in tools in 18 years and a don't even own a crescent wrench. Any professional technician will have the correct wrench to fit the fastener that needs to be removed. The repeated removing and installing of the nuts could have worn the threads off of your camber bolts, new bolts should not be expensive, and it is expected after several alignments.

was the second alignment successful? truck drives ok as a good as a ranger does. The part that gets stripped is the eccentric. Eccentrics part has numbers on it +-1/4 degree or +-1/2 degree or +-3/4 degree These eccentrics are turned to bring camber and caster into specification. Mechanic uses a cresent wrench and rounds over the corners . Toe in or toe out are the big tire wearing specification and need to be perfect. Factory eccentrics do not turn to adjust smooth round top and they are fixed with a rib and bolted solid.

yes these bolts are easy to strip,,if you don't know how to loosen them up,,and most shops think they do,,but they always strip them,,and tell the customer that there bad and need replaced,,i own a repair shop,,and have seen a lot of them get stripped out,,its very possible they might have done the damage,,and then again,,they might have been already stripped out,,if you bought it used,,there,s no Way to know for sure,,good luck,,i hope this help,s.
