well - to say that liberals "hate" religious fundamentalists might be ba bit strong.
From my experience, liberals have never been very comfortable with religion. They don't seem to be outright opposed to it - but they aren't really comfortable embracing it either.
Think about it this way - when you get some people who are highly educated - they tend to look down on those who are religious - people who rely on "faith".
Anyways - you also have to keep in mind that Liberals are also much more tolerant of religious fundamentalists outside the US than they are of religious fundamentalists inside they US.
I.e. they like the Taliban more than they like Born Again Christians in the the U.S.
The new Neocon tactic to say liberals are soft of Islamic extremists is because they are. Democrats in general tend to give islamic extremists a pass - talking about how "compassionate" they are because they build day care centers - or they goto Baghdad and say Bush is the real terrorist.
And look at what is happening to Joe Liberman, a pro-war Democrat (oops - sorry - he's an "Independent" now) who lost his primary re-election - and has pretty much lost all support from the mainline Democratic Party - all because he was being hard on terrorists and Islamic extremists.

i imagine its specially the Abortion situation. they can't understand why progressives are so keen about women persons getting abortions. they're going to bash you contained in the face with signs and indications declaring a woman's proper to chosen. professional- determination bla bla bla. Anyone with any sense would feel sorry for the fundamentalist. How would you like to figure out how to follow the strict law of the Bible. Like How? The Bible is full of contradictions.
But in the New Testament Jesus talks about forgiveness. But many Fundamentalist Christians believe in vengeance just like the many of the people in the Middle East talk about vengeance's, believe in it and actually follow through with vengeance's.
To be anything but open minded when talking to these people is useless. But to refuse to talk to them until they do things your way, is dim witted to say the least. It means to me, that you really just what to induce an opportunity to attack the other side. He really only wants to attack the other side.
Attacking the other side is Bush's foreign policily.

I think they hate anything they perceive as "fundamentalist" Christianity (whatever that means). Hating any other religion is "intolerance."

No Liberals just hate any christianity, no matter how liberal that christianity is. they hate the fundermentalist more because they fight back against them and speak out against thier lies.
And no one has to really say they are soft on Islam, that is just commom knowledge
