You may have spyware and/or adware that is taking up your computer's memory. A couple of very good spyware / adware detection and removal utilities are Spybot and AdAware.
Spybot: http://www.download.com/Spybot-Search-Destroy/3000-8022_4-10401314.html?tag=lst-0-1
AdAware: http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3000-8022_4-10399602.html?tag=lst-0-1
Download and install them, preferably both, update them, and then scan your computer.
Also, when reviewing your computer for spyware, adware, and viruses, you should occassionally check that your "Hosts" file has not been corrupted. It can be found at either \\Winnt\System32\drivers\etc or \\Windows\System32\drivers\etc
You should most likely have nothing in the Host file below the "127.0.0.1 localhost" line. If there is a bunch of stuff in there, try to find another, uneditted version over or remove everything below the "127.0.0.1" line.
If that does not fix the problem, you may want to try another antivirus application and I would suggest you take a look at Avast Home Edition which has good ratings on Download.com. If you like it, download, install, update, and scan your system with it also.

Bad Motherboard or CPU: characterized by unexplained & random reboots, screen freezes, system locks. This takes me back, Way Back to A+ School, and Hands On Repairs. Your Best bet, that the CPU is going and needs replaced, since this is the cheapest of the two, try replacing it, OR make sure all cables in the tower are seated correctly and the RAM Modules are seated tightly, and if you do open the tower, AT LEAST GROUND YOURSELF BY TOUCHING AND HOLDING THE UNPAINTED BACKSIDE OF THE TOWER, And Even do this Barefooted to, will help from frying anything that you touch inside of the tower, Make sure you have it turned off, unplugged, and NO CABLES Hooked up. Safety, Safety Please.... Good Luck

Did you add and new device or install new software? Remove them if required.
Check your RAM. If u have 2, take 1 out, test to see if freezing happens. Then swap and test again. If you have 1, see if u can borrow from friend.
Check if the CPU is over heated. If you overclock, reduce the CPU speed.
Check if you are having too many devices such that your POwer Supply cannot support.

Two options:
either a)
download avg anti virus, spybot search and destroy, ad aware, and ewido.
run them all. delete anything that comes up.
restart your system
(warning takes a long time)
or b)
go to start
all programs
accessories
system tools
system restore
restore your system back to an early date when nothing was going wrong with your computer
restart your computer
(takes less time but you will lose what you downloaded/added to your computer in the days following the restore date)

The problem has to do with your registry. Go to filehippo.com and there you will find many free and most popular downloads for just about everything. You will see ccleaner.com, it's free and easy to use, but this only cleans out your cookies, and other stuff. So you will also need a registry or error fixer. I suggest using registry mechanic or one of the top brands. Go to google search and put in the bar the best and most popular registry fixers and they will lead you to a website that list the best and most popular registry fixers on the market.

You should consider formatting and reinstallation if you are in possesion of Windows CD, and cds of antivirus and other software that came with your computer. You should burn all your data onto cds, before you format the hard disk.
(This is the best you can do, before taking it to a hardware professional to find out defective hardware)
Read the blog below, for detailed instructions on formatting and reinstalling windows.
