For most years prior to 1982, the cent (not penny) was made from .950 copper and .050 zinc It weighed 3.11 grams
The current cent is made from .992 zinc and .008 copper.
It weighs 2.5 grams
During 1982, both types were made.

From 1944-1946, the cents were made from bronze shell casings.

In 1943, they were made from zinc-coated steel and are magnetic.

More than you really wanted to know, isn't it.

When you respect yourself, others' respect you. So, if you are worthy in your own eyes, you can be worthy in somebody's eyes as well. But Who is that somebody? I have realised that you can't please everyone in life. And it's not important. The more you are dependent on 'social approval', or basically approval from others', the less you can be in your true self. Living a life to conform is not at all worthwhile in my opinion. So if that 'somebody' is the one who means a lot in my life - only then I would take the efforts to be worthy in that someone's eyes. I read a very beautiful thought recently - ~ "You can't make anyone to love you. What you can do is, try to be a person to be loved by someone and leave the rest to the person to understand your worth." ~ And, a penny is worth something. Sometimes, asking for something by throwing it in some 'fortune fountains', it is known to fulfill wishes. Maybe by doing that, a penny can make you understand it's worth. :)

Post-1982 pennies are mostly zinc. The earlier ones are copper. The metal was changed when the price of copper rose.

They are now zinc pennies plated with copper, but before 1982 they were solid copper.

What another perceives as my worth, my status as a being is really none of my business. When your concept & understanding of self expands to include others & meet reality the all consuming need to be loved & accepted is replaced with becoming love & acceptance. When this happens you come to realize when you seek to be loved you rarely feel love, but when you seek to love you rarely feel unloved. Many Blessings!

I don't think there is any difference. However, for about 2 years during WWII pennies weren't made of copper because reserves were low from war. They were made of some type of alloy/steel.
