I have first hand knowledge on this subject. Feeling suicidal is painful and a lot more. It feels so bad you can not think rational thoughts. I though the only way to stop the most horrible feelings and thoughts was to stop feeling all together and that meant to die, only way I could see it helping. A person can get to a point where they don't want to die but they don't think anyone or anything can help them on this earth. Most people who have taken this route didn't know how to live anymore and most who are serious don't tell anyone they just do it. Especially if there is no one they feel they can talk to in trust. It needs to be dealt with professionally with a stay in the hospital till they get to thinking positive again. It's one of those things that if you have never felt it or experienced it you just can't understand it. It is not a chicken way out. It's very sad and I'm surprised at some remarks made from people who don't obviously don't have a clue.

This is a complex question.

Suicide can be viewed, in certain societies and in certain circumstances, as courageous. Take the Japanese Samurai for instance. Sepuku could be an option, but normally it was a death sentence. In either scenario, it was an opportunity for the Samurai to preserve his honor and to possibly secure the well being of his family. Courage was required to accomplish Sepuku because of the difficulty involved, in addition to the finality of ending one's life.

There are other instances where self sacrifice is made for a greater good. UAL Flight 93 is believed to have been downed by the passengers during the 9/11 attack to prevent the hijackers from using the plane as a missile. I'm sure everyone would agree that those passengers were courageous.

Of course, there are those who choose suicide during some kind of personal crisis. These are tragic. Words like courage and cowardice, in my opinion, don't apply in this category. The person may have been mentally ill or living with great pain while terminally ill. In any event, I would refrain judgment.

Suicide is never the answer! People commit suicide because of love problems, money problems, or depression. They feel overwhelmed and can't make a rational deciscion. They should seek help. It's free and just a phone call away.

In my opinion, its not brave, it just takes some balls!
If a person is fully aware of what they are about to lose and who they will hurt in the end and they don't fear death (like the majority of people do), then they have balls.

Of course, its never the right thing to do. BUT, who is to judge that? Everyone has their own opinions (and religious beliefs that determine what they think, sometimes).

If your friend is contemplating killing themselves, tell them that they are special, if not to anyone else then to you. Its 'brave' to try to live your life. think of the people you would be hurting and how they would feel.

Do what you gotta do to save your friend, even if that means you need to help them get help!

when a person suicides, he wants to die and doing what a person wants is no courage(or brave).I wont say they are coward coz suicide can not be related to such words. Suicide goes beyond the laws of nature. So suicide can not be explained through this words.
Let not dig this word. Let the feeling remain that suicide is a bad thing.
(why dint ur friend think something positive instead of creating such questions to make us proof wrong, and u asking such questions and making people think on it....very bad)

With all due respect to those whe have committed suicide, no they are not brave. What is braver is going on with life and making the best of it despite all the obstacles that come our way. To kill oneself is a way out because there is too much emotional pain and they feel that they can not deal with it, but they can. They feel hopeless and think that there is no other way and some feel that there is, but that it is too hard for them. I pray for all who want to end their life because it is a permanent solution to a temporary problem.

I think they need to be brave for that one moment, more brave than they've ever been to actually go through with it. But the over-all plan to commit suicide is very selfish and cowardly. I don't care much a suicide note says "I love you", they don't love you if they take their lives without knowing that they are also taking away your life too.

If your friend asked you this, you need to keep a closer eye on him/her.

As for courage, I would think it is pretty unfair to judge someone else unless you have gone through what they have. It's easy to judge someone from a distance.

When my friend commited suicide, there was no warnings, no strange questions, just tons and tons of a bad life on her shoulders.

I don't think so. Shakespeare said, "We owe God a death," meaning you have to go eventually anyway. Why rush it? I don't judge people who are in terrible pain and want a way out, but perhaps they just need better pain medication, not death.
Daily living, the right way, takes a lot of bravery. To get through life without harming yourself or others or disappointing loved ones who rely on you. . .now that's real heroism. Good luck.

I don't like to call anyone a coward, like some others did in response to your question. It takes guts to get through this life, and I won't be quick to judge. That said, I believe suicide is a broken contract with God, and if you take that way out, you'll reincarnate right back into the same situation that you tried to leave. You have to live out your life in the way it's been charted.
