Let's say these figues represent families monthly income. If you have a really rich family, their income would be called an outlier and would drive the mean up.

mean is just average of the total means x1+x2+x3 /3 = x while median is the number where half of the numbers in that set is larger and other half is smaller and example will be 1, 5 , 7, 9 , 100 while median will be 7 because there are 2 greater and two smaller number in the set while mean will be 61.
