There are alot of children with this problem...ruling out any sexual abuse first... truly the best thing is to explain how a toilet works...remember you're dealing with a 5 yr. old. Usually public toilets are far different in appearance from home and the urinals are not always "kid" friendly. Explain how it works and let the child flush a toilet a few times or show them how the automatic ones work. Make sure not to tramatize them by making them wait til they can't hold it anymore and forcing them to use the facility. Then you'll make things worse. It is an overwhelming feeling for some to be in an enclosed area with all the pipes and sounds and of course STRANGE PEOPLE. Anyone hates to have someone walk in on them or leave a wonderful SURPRISE in the toilet. We laugh about it now but to a little one it's scary! Patience...and good luck!

Well they're usually not the cleanest, are they? I'm a girl, and I even avoid public restrooms if I can. Try to find out why he's afraid - did something happen in a bathroom and he's embarrased? Go in with him a few times and make him feel as comfortable as possible.

Find out why he's afraid of them, and possibly take him to see a counselor if need be. Perhaps he experienced something traumatic in a public restroom or saw something in there that scared him. Or, are there any older boys in the family or neighborhood that could have told him some falsity that scared him? Find out the why, then try to deal with it. Good luck!

Take him in a bathroom when you go, when the bathroom is not busy. Just let him kinda see you use it but dont make him go. do this a few times then sometime again when the bathroom isnt busy have him try o go . If he doesnt go dont make a big deal out of it. Do this a few times eventually it should work.

take him to one of those public restrooms where it is just for one person. then he can be in there just with you and see there is nothing to be afraid of. when he is comfortable then take him to a public restroom when nobody is in there and let him get comfortable.
It might be all the other people that are making him nervous

Send him to camp. He will have to go to a public restroom and he'll get used to it. Other than that don't worry too much, it's normal and common, plus he's got his whole life ahead of him to get used to the idea

Well, hey, would YOU feel comfortable taking one right next to someone else? It's easily understandable; sometimes they put stalls (like in movie theaters) side by side with no wall between them. You never know if the guy right next to you is checking you out or something! *shudder*
