Main benefit to signing is a few months pay as severance. I also want the unemployment naturally if I am qualified. I will phone the DOL tomorrow and ask my status.

Hey Shag,

Go wth Steve! Call the employment development office. Tell them your story. This way if there is a problem, you've already got the EDD on your side!

Is everybody missing the severance portion of your question?

Good Luck!

The unemployment office will usually call the place where you worked and investigate it. In PA if u were fired you can still collect unemployment depending on why u were fired. If you quit...that is moreless saying you didn't want to work and they won't give you unemployment. Unless you quit for a good reason. But it doesn't hurt to try ....the worst they can do is say your not elligiable. Good Luck.

Tie it to a severance if they want you to sign it to leave. This would be approx 2 - 4 weeks. This is common with employers. You can still collect unemployment as long as you're willing and able to obtain employment.

Call the unemployment office and ask them before you sign anything. If you quit, you can't collect; if you're laid off, you can. But if you say it's mutual, they can construe that as you having quit.

In Canada if you get canned you do not get unemployment. If it is mutual you do not get unemployment. If you quit you do not get unemployment. You must be sick, dying, someone else in your family dying, or laid off to collect. I don't know if it's the same in the states, but Ask them to LAY YOU OFF.

Absolutely. You can't collect unemployment only if you quit, or do something HIGHLY innapropriate (which would then require a hearing...) I was a witness in a hearing once, unless you stole something or threatened someone you're OK...

never sign anything? if they don't want you there let them fire you. if you leave the state will have the right to deny your unemployment request.

Maybe not.

Did they let you keep working until you found another job?
