When a woman undergoes general anesthesia for a cesarean operation, why isn't the father or another support person allowed in to be with the mother?

OK, so who says the mother doesn't need support before going under? Why can't the father be present at the birth of his child?

It depends on the hospital policy and the circumstances surrounding the birth of the baby. I'm a L+D nurse. At my hospital no support people are allowed in the OR during a life-threatening crisis situation. Our efforts are focused on saving the lives of the mother and/ or her baby. We cannot be distracted by family members who are understandingly panicked. Even in uncomplicated deliveries we have support people who vomit, faint, have panic attacks, try to run out of the room knocking down anyone in their path, etc.

That being said, for a non-urgent c-section one support person is welcome to attend the birth even when the mom has a general {asleep}. We ask that person to wait outside the OR door until the mom is sedated and draped{covered with sterile blankets}. When one is 'going under' it is not very pretty. Nothing bad is done to them, but watching them being intubated can be upsetting. Their wife/girlfriend/daughter is stetched out while a Dr. and nurse place a large breathing tube down her throat.

We forewarn the support person what to expect when they see the mom 'asleep'. We have a chair ready for them so they can sit next to the sleeping mom's head and wait for baby to arrive. As soon as baby is born, we encourage them to come over to the baby warmer (if they feel OK) and take photos of the baby & touch and swaddle and cuddle the baby . This is very important for the family to bond. The mom misses the first hour of her baby's life and she needs someone close to her to fill in those missing moments. That is one of the reasons why, if at all possible, we prefer if the mom stays awake for her surgery with the benefits of a spinal or epidural.

Some hosptials may be a bit behind the times.

Women generally aren't put under general (because of the risks involved) for cesarean unless it's an emergency. At that point it's all about getting the baby out fast. Most doctor's don't do general anesthesia unless it's an emergency.

When I had to undergo an emergency c-section (prolapsed cord), I was put under general. There was not time to prepare another person or care about my emotional needs. The baby was lacking oxygen and I had pre-eclampsia so we were both risk factors. Hubby would have just been in the way. I lost a lot of blood and the baby was blue. It would have been horrible for hubby to be there for that madhouse of activity as it may have slowed down activity and put both of us at greater risk.

Because under general, the patient is totally out, requires no support and the person is just in the way. If the patient is under a block, they can have a support person who stays clear of the surgical field. This is considered a real surgery and not a spectator sport. In some cases, onlookers cause more problems, like passing out, hitting their heads, throwing up...than they do good.

Because since the mother is unconscious, there is no need for her to have support.

I had a c-section and was given a spinal...my husband was in there with me. He got to hold our son as soon as they cleaned him up...it could be a hospital rule...or a state or city law...

Wow, my hubby was in for both of mine? They just wouldn't let cameras in!

Time for a different hospital!

Because general is NOT unconscious, right?
If it is unconscious, then they have no need to be in there?!
