Why do people insist on getting exotic animals when they don't even know how to care for or feed them?

Where did you get the animal? They didn't give you instructions? Doesn't this strike you as kind of irresponsible?

Try going to your bait shop, where fishermen buy worms, crickets, and such. You can buy some rather cheap.

You can mail order some from the Cricket Farm in Glennville, GA.

I think you mean African Spurred Tortoises, and getting one without doing research first is just downright stupid. Sorry, but it's the honest truth. You're gonna have a problem if you don't know that they can get big enough to sit on when they're adults.

Most commercial diets aren't very good for a spurred. They need to have mostly grass, and the rest various vegetables. You can also give them fruits sometimes for treats.

Do you mean an African Spurred tortoise (Geochelone sulcata)? The third largest species of tortoise on Earth? The guys with the huge appetites?

They can do OK on good quality prepared tortoise chow, but prefer a fresh diet. Too much protein or grains will cause long-term problems, so avoid things like horse or monkey chow (common answers, but not great options.)

A good link for the tortoise itself is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sulcata_tortoise

A good diet link for tortoises is: http://www.petdoc.ws/TortDiet.html

You can get some great info, as well as some stories about these as pets at http://www.tortoise.org

most commercial diets contain alot more protein than most tortoise need. Feed greens and hay that are high in fiber content. Stay away from kale as it is more acidic than other greens. Cuctus is another favorite of tortoises.

However if you must have a commercial diet I know of a few people that use Mazuri diet. However they don't use it exclusively they use it as a supplement along with greens and such.
