This may be a software bug, LG software releases are usually rushed and contain a hive of bugs.
*228 will not work, it will only program your phone with your account related parameters. Talk to your service provider to erase your messages from the message center (on their network).

Try clearing you message alerts, or inbox notifications.
I'm not sure how to do that on the LG Chocolate. The option is usually under the messages sub-menu on most phones.
Good luck!

You sure its your voicemail. You may have your icons mixed up. It could very well mean that your inbox is full or you have a message waiting for you. Check all your messages, missed calls, delete your inbox and so on. If it doesnt resolve anything, then take it in.

Software problem, update software (*228, option 2), if that doesn't work then go to where you got it and have a tech look at it.
