31! and will never grow up - however in order to be fun at 31 you do need money, so you have to have a good job!

Dude, it sounds like you're screwed right now.

And the surf bum thing- you know there are entire industries that supply the surf community. Why not find a job with insurance and a retirement plan at a company that makes surf equipment? That way everyone in your office will understand when you come in at 11AM with wet feet.

And the growing up part- sounds like you are dangling on the edge of a cliff and your potential girlfriend/serious life partner has told you she doesn;t want to date a child anymore. Yeah, it sucks but can you see yourself without her in 10 years and being a happy person or will you be kicking yourself in the rear because you let the perfect wave pass without riding it to see where it will take you?

Kiddo- there IS no greater adventure than love.

Wow, what a question! I would say that maybe you could combine your love of surfing with a career. Of course, then you might be working so hard you won't have time to surf...If you have a degree, I would suggest getting a "real" job in Corporate America. When all is said and done, unless your folks are multi-millionaires and you are the sole heir, you will need insurance, savings, and benefits. You may not find the perfect job the first time out, but, you can work toward it. You know, you can do what you like after work on weekends and vacations. You know, growing up is not what you do, but who you are.

I know you think it sounds fun now but you need to stop and grow up at some point. That doesn't mean that you still can't have fun - you just need to pick and choose when the time is right to party, etc. When you have a job, that comes first and you don't party the night before. Save it for the weekends. You'll get nowhere fast on the track you're on. Best of luck to you! You can do it!!!

I've been around many old people lately, and I see that without a pension, you are in pretty bad shape as an older person. So, unless you are planning on getting a 6 figure job in your mid-40's and working for 30 years, then I suggest you start to get a grip now. You don't have to grow up on your off time -- just while you are working. Good luck!!

why can't you find a real job with benefits and surf on your free time? is that so hard to imagine? just because you have a job, doesn't mean you have to stop living your life. the real question you should be asking yourself is, are you ready to be responsible? your problem is you don't want to take responsibility and thus you work seasonal jobs and would rather be a bum. good luck when you're 60 and homeless.

Why bother growing up?

I think people only grow up when they have to -- raising kids, for example.

It sounds like mostly a selfish lifestyle and I applaud that.

I doubt you'll regret not having retirement but you may regret not having a kid.

But, dood, you're happy -- so many are miserable at what they do, act a little more smug.

I am 34 have a life savings, work, have kids and still haven't grownup. i love to go on vacation, party, clubbing, dancing, go to the beach, walk in the rain, get thrown in pool with all my clothes on, laugh, and have a great time. I will never be boring, or seem uptight but that doesn't mean sitting around being lazy. To have great fun, you need money to do all the things you love.

To be a kid doesn't mean your a loser...no job...bum!

I'm 41 and still a kid! I hold a job, care for my family...and save the world on my XBOX just about every night.

I flew helicopters in the Army...now design chips for computers...there is more to life and fun than irresponsibility!

I'm a scientist by day...and play with plastic animals on the floor with my daughter by evening!

Well...gotta go plan my next Disney World vacation...bye!

What are the consequences of your actions? You want to have no retirement benefits when the time comes...how will you live then unless the folks are planning on leaving you a major amount of money.

You can choose to live any life style you'd like to but there is always a price to pay. When you get old how will you live? Where will you live with no money. You can't work occasional jobs forever, well I guess you can. My brother lived like that and he is now 66 and HAS to work because he has nothing to fall back on. So when will he get to retire.....NEVER!!!
