It's a base for other low paying jobs. If minimum wage stays low the wage for other jobs will not increase. Besides what kind of motivation do young people have to go to a job where at least two hours of work goes into paying for gas back and forth from there job. It's my opinion that if min. wage doesn't increase while gas prices continue to rise more people will be more inclined to stay at home and draw assistance from state and country.

Another problem with keeping the minimum wage lows means that the next level of jobs have salaries that are low.
OK...mimimum wage is say $5, if it gets raised to $7, the guy who makes $8 and hour should now get a raise. When you make 40 or $50K, you are not affected by a change in the minimum wage, but the poor guy at 20 or $25K will be great full to get that little push up the scale.

Because some can't ever get past the starting point. Some are single mothers in their 30s and didn't have the opportunity to go to college or have a strategic plan for advancement within a company.
Most of the individuals that are adults on minimum wage have a family and need to feed their children and they will do whatever it takes to do that and companies know that. Thats why they pay them as less as they can, which isn't fiar.

Because the cost of living has rose. Even if its a starting point, you need a starting point of a place to support yourself while you work your way up in the world.
Also I think this country is a bit cheap on its minimum wage. Some people have no means of moving their way up... or haev a lack of resources at the moment. It seems to be getting harder to survive with just that when corporations and businesses dont hand out annual raises or care enough about employees to pay them something decent after they have worked and proven themselves worthy of a raise. Not all... just a thought.

Minimum wage is hardly a liveable wage for one person. It has not kept up with the cost of living and inflation. The only ones who benefit from a low minimum wage are the companies paying it.
That said, regardless of the original intention of minimum wage, many family are trying to get by on it. It should be raised to a liveable wage so that they can get by as well.

Your question oddly insinuates that minimum wage is a "welfare" largess of liberals or something. Minimum wage, the right to survive and make enough to live on, is everyone's "inalienable right". Minimum wage is not a give-a-way program. Minimum wage should afford a worker enough to actually make it through the month and get a bad tooth fixed every now and then. Wage-slavery is as sick morally as is slavery.

Because regardless of what it was meant to do originally, the brutal economic truth is that more and more families are having to subsist on minimum wage these days. I'm no economist, but the X and Y generations are drastically less well off in general than their parents, and their children will be even less well off than they, if the US economy doesn't turn around dramatically in the next decade.

If some people have a family to begin with, they might need more than the minimum. ANd if the minimum is too low then raise it so the family in question can be supported.

certain. until eventually we replace all unskilled complicated artwork positions with robots, very nearly all of accessible jobs will be unskilled positions paying minimum salary. even with the reality that if everybody were given a proper education, those positions ought to nevertheless prefer to be crammed (basically ask any college graduate operating as a cashier). the idea that they are "meant to be" non everlasting positions for faculty youthful little ones is ludicrous. meant to via whom? no count number what we do, no count number what type of education human beings get, the majority will finally end up operating minimum-salary jobs. no longer everybody can get that "more effective activity" with a residing salary and reward - there basically are not sufficient of them to pass round. hi, I desire it replaced into diverse too - I desire each and every American ought to get a school degree and pass on to develop right into a millionaire authorities, and elevate a pleased nicely-adjusted relatives, yet it really is only a pipe dream. So what can we do with the human beings who, for even with the reality that reason, do not make it to the actual? tell them they could't have little ones? stress them to make stronger a relatives in poverty basically because some different person replaced into smarter or in good structure or whiter or a more effective brown-noser or replaced into more effective prepared to compromise their concepts for monetary fulfillment? i comprehend there are those who say "certain! Screw them! more effective for me!" yet i'm no longer one in each and every of those human beings. i imagine everybody merits a shot. everybody.
