i tried turning off all the auto correct options in my docment and it does not want work. I need to type in ratios (13:1 but it changes to 13:01) and it is not allowing me to keep the numbers I want to keep. And the formating does not have an option so i can keep it this way!...I also tried creating my own and it would not let me!
How can I keep the numbers I need!!!!????

The answers so far do not address how you refer to your ratio in calculations. These solutions all apply to setting up a label. You can set up this label by using the single quote and you can use a space as well.

If you need to change the label and have it reflect in calculations without editing the other formulas, you will need to set those calculations up to evaluate the number part of the label

Here is the formula for doing that. Assume the label ratio is in cell B9:
=VALUE
(LEFT(B9,FIND(":",B9)-1))
/MID(B9,FIND(":",B9)+1,99)

(Sorry about the multiple lines, Answers was truncating it and using ... like they do on long links. I separated it so it would show all the characters. Enter them all on one line in Excel.)

Simply multiply your other factor to this formula and you have your ratio evaluated number.

Note: the 13:01 was an assumed time 1:01 pm and put in 24 hr notation.

you could either:

try pressing CTRL+1 (shortcut to format cells) and on the 'number' tab choose 'text' from the category list. it will stay as 13:1 then.

OR

you can also type '13:1 - with an apostrophe before the ratio and it will not change to 13:01 when you press 'enter'. this way you don't need to have the cell type set to text.

You could also use a single quote mark...so type '13:1 and Excel will keep the formatting the way you need it.

Try formatting the cell as "text only" - then it will display the text exactly as you enter it. (To do so, right-click on the cell/column/row you want to format that way and choose "Format Cell" - then choose "text only" from the list on the first tab.) Alternatively, you can type an apostrophe " ' " before the number, and that will prompt Excel to read whatever you type afterwards as text.

the colon is an illegal character as it represents a formula, format the cell by typing an apostrophe before the 13

If you put an apostrophe in front, Excel will treat it like text and not change anything. Like this:

'13:1

Right click the cell > select format cells > and select text

change the type to TEXT

It will show up exactly as you type it.

put an apostrophe sign in the box before you type. (') with out the brackets
