I've seen ads for Australian Sugar Gliders. They're not really flying squirrels, but they look remarkably similar.
I kept two Southern Flying Squirrels for about a month, on a big screened-in porch at our house in Alabama. They had taken up residence in the attic, and we caught them and relocated them to the porch. We got them a hamster cage, with a little plastic "hamster house" in it. We put a sock inside the house, and we would let them out at night to fly around the screened-in porch. We left them various nuts to eat. At the crack of dawn, they would become more active, making their last "flying runs" of the day, and then they'd go into the hamster house on their own and put the sock in front of the door and go to sleep.
They're fascinating animals and I enjoyed watching them, but they do tend to relieve themselves everywhere. I think it would be cruel to keep them penned up in a small area; they need to be able to glide to be happy. But the mess is a real problem, so long-term I don't think they're good to keep as pets, unless you can construct some sort of fancy aviary pen for them. Also, they are nocturnal, so you have to stay up late or get up early in order to enjoy them. After a month, we gave ours their freedom. (They probably missed the fancy nuts, though!)

FYI - Contrary to what Pheobe said, there is a huge difference between flying squirrels and sugar gliders. Sugar Gliders are marsupials, not rodents. Just thought you should know!

First double check with your state laws regarding exotic animals, as flying squirrels are technically wild animals. There are many breeders in Texas that sell and ship them.
