It is unusual. Most babies will be more than ready to start on solids by 6 months of age. There may be special developmental or health concerns that would keep a baby on liquids, but that would be rare.
When should my baby start solids?
Human milk is the only food that healthy, full-term babies need for about the first six months of life. The composition of human milk varies according to the time of day and the age of the baby, so that each mother provides the milk that meets her own baby's unique needs. Human milk provides immunity factors for as long as the baby nurses, and many of the health benefits of breastfeeding continue well into childhood and beyond.
Most solid foods are lower in calories than human milk, of lower nutritional value, and can be difficult for young babies to digest. Introduced early, they can cause unpleasant reactions and even trigger allergies. These problems can be avoided by waiting until your baby is ready for solids. Some parents have found introducing solids before baby is ready to be a waste of time, energy and money.

It's not unusual... but its not good for the baby... my neice is about 14 months and hardly eats any solids... never any real solids... her mom is so scared that she is going to choke that she wont let anyone feed her anything actually solid.... it doesnt help that every time some one asks her mom if they could feed her some rice or something, her mom says "No!!! She'll CHOKE!" Talk about giving the kid a phobia (even if she cant fully understand yet)
Oh... and one time, when her mom was not in veiwing range and I was eating some Chinese food which had rice, I feed her some of it......... and she ate it just fine.

I have five children and it took my youngest at three now to start eating solids at nine months. You should maybe just have the doctor take a look and make sure he or she is healthy and not iron deficient and proteins are being adminstered. Other than than he or she should be fine. Start her out on some toast or crackers and keep giving her some nutritous foods for a while until she is used to food then she can eat what he or she likes. Thats the best advice i can give. Good luck.

It's definitely unusual for a 10 month old not to be eating solids. How are they getting their nutrition? Formula and not even breast milk are sufficient enough for a growing 10 month old...not even cereal. Who ever you're talking about should definitely start giving their baby other food right away.

I know that both of my children were eating cereal (rice baby cereal) at about 4 months so to a complete leyman who's only experience is her own kids, 10 months is pretty late not be be eating at least cerals.
That said, any time you have a question about your baby, no matter how stupid you think it is, you should never hesitate to ask your pediatrician! By the time my first born was 10 months old, I knew the doctors number by heart! Callt hem tomorrow and ask for advice.
They will help you to determine if your baby is getting enough to eat, gaining the correct amount of weight and if there is anything to be concerned about.
Good Luck -

Most infants are introduced to at least cereal by 6-9 months. However, there are any number of reasons a child would not be on solids by 10 months. And really even at that point the child would still be obtain the majority of nutrition from formula or breast milk.

Yes, it's unusual. Do the parents offer mash potatoes, soft vegatables, pasta, etc? If not do so, if you do then the baby is choosing to refuse these foods. It could be that it's a whole new realm of foods he or she is not ready to aquire the taste for or the texture is an issue and the baby could just be a picky eater.

Try something in between a soft and solid... eggs, cream cheeses, soft breads, fries, etc V8 has plenty of juices veg and fruit to make sure he is still getting nutrients if he is still being stubborn and not eating. At the end of the day you are the parent and all children WILL eat when they do not get anything else. Everytime you give in, he has won and KNOWS that if he holds out... you will give him what he wants!

my daughter is 9 months old, she is breastfeed and i introduced solids to her at 6 months. It was more for practice using a spoon. At 9 months she does like sweet potatoes and applesauce and mash potatoes. But thats it. She more intrested in her breastmilk.
I know that she also enjoys finger foods. Cut up soft noodles and such. But thats it. I wouldnt rush it, baby is fine with momma's milk or formula until 1yr old.

My doctor told me to wait untill they are atleats 4 months old before introducing solid foods(baby food, or baby cereal). But he also said they do not "need" anything other than breast milk or formula for up to a year old.
