I hope that this doesn't entirely gross you out, but when I visited a Nacirema village, I actually saw a man and a woman exchange saliva. This was, apparently, preparatory to exchanging other bodily fluids. The two people believe that they are engaging in a mystical and somewhat magical rite.

However, the latter ceremony was not open to public view. But, a warrior who had once engaged in this squishy swap-fest told me that the ceremony actually involved the female accepting a part of the male's body inside her own.

These are a truly mysterious people. Yet, as Malinowsky wrote: "Looking from far and above, from our high places of safety in the developed civilization, it is easy to see all the crudity and irrelevance of magic."

One fairly noticeable trait in a lot of the Nacirema is their dissatisfaction with their epidermal layer, otherwise known as the skin. The Nacirema have devised ways to overcome this. They have devised ways to replace these dissatisfactory areas of the epidermal layer with either man-made materials or more of the same. For this they have to pay a visit to certain highly specialized individuals. These highly specialized individuals are given the name of Rotcod. These individuals have spent half their lives, or even more, learning and practicing various techniques to improve a Nacirema life. Some of them even save Nacirema lives.

What strikes me the most is the Nacirema will to change what has been indisputably theirs from the beginning of their lives. However, this does not include certain physical scars that are inflicted on them by accident or on purpose by either the hand of the vicious or the hands of Fate. The reasons for this go deep into the Nacirema culture where they take pride in knowing and believing that they are in control of their lives at all points of time as well as the belief that they can change whatever they want almost whenever they want. The Nacirema are a rich people and change is expensive. Hence, the Nacirema have amongst them an unusually large number of the Rotcod.

In order for the Nacirema to undergo a change in epidermal layer, they must go through a series of processes. These processes are often not extremely pleasant, but the Nacirema have mastered the art of living in a brighter future. The present pains become a spirit of the past rather swiftly at such times. The processes involve the Nacirema to have assorted sizes of needles stuck into them and various bodily fluids being stolen from them. However, this does not deter the Nacirema from disowning what they have had for the longest time. Their fluids are put through various examinations to determine whether they can undergo such a heavy change. After this they are admitted to large buildings known as hospitals. These hospitals are extremely clean and if a single germ is found, the life of the germ is terminated immediately. The Nacirema are given the utmost sense of security by this and they pay half their life’s savings for this.

We party and consume and waste to the extreme, and then we wonder why we aren't ready when retirement comes.
