I want to leave my husband. Getting ready for it and everything, but then my husband dropped a bombshell that he will get rid of the dogs because the kids won't take proper care of them and he won't either. (in a way it makes sense but still...) I am a sensitive pet person and to tell me that when I leave, they will be put in the pound. 2 5yo dogs and a 1 yo sweet cat and a cocatiel, it breaks my heart to think that I need to leave. I can't take them with me, at least not for a long time, which is too long. Advice or sympathy please.

My heart goes out to you big time. Do you have a family member that can take them temporarily? A friend? What about your local breeder or pet store owner? The guy I buy dog food from owns the father, sister and brother of my chocolate lab, and he would probably take Shadow if I couldn't keep him. Other wise, I have a cousin who has a few dogs, and I know Shadow is welcome anytime.

PLEASE try to find someone who will care for your dogs. My uncle had two fox-terriers, and when he got divorced, his ex got them, and her brother ended up with them. Not soon after one of the dogs (Roscoe) DIED. The f***head abused the dog.
Do whatever you can do.

My dear friend, Your husband is giving you a very honest preview of the heartbreak and sadness that ensues for people as well as pets when marital separation occurs. If you are a sensitive pet person than you must be a sensitive kid person and your children will have to deal with absences and emotional unheaval as well. It is not to anyones benefit to dissolve a family unit. If your husband is not physically abusive or cheating on you than I urge you to try to work something out to avoid all the pain. There were many times in my marriage when I wished to leave my husband but as time went on I learned what I call marriage wisdoms. As time goes by situations change and people mature and you always have God to shoulder your load if you just ask him. Ask for his answer. I think your heart is ready.

first of all don't let your feelings for your pets keep you in a bad relationship. YOU come first. I doubt the animals would really go to the pound but you can't take the chance i guess. Is boarding them out of the question? I guess i would go around to all the people who love me and beg them to take care of them for me until a certain time. Then to friends and then to people who hate me. point is, somebody would help you out if you needed them. Do the kids love the pets? maybe they would put pressure on husband.

Place the pets in a new home before you go - run and ad in your local classified and give them away to a good home. Then you know they will be well taken care of and you may just make a new friend :)

I understand completely...It is extremely hard. I had to leave my cats with my ex...but only briefly, until I found a place to stay. I was basically "homeless" for a time. Luckily friends let me stay with them, but I was moving daily. But in the end I moved out of state and took the cats with me...And we are all fine now. I hope it all works out for you.

Do you have a friend that will board your pets for you for a while?

Why sympathy? You are leaving him and he is telling you, look, either these animales go to a home where they are taken care of or you take care of them since they are too your pets.

You be leaving anyways and not happening to care for the animals if they kept them, how does it matter to you anyways if not carrying for them in the first place? It doesn't.

Therefore, either take the animals in or find homes for them personally before taken them to spca etc.
