I know it used to be a nasty surgery and all 15 years ago (like when my doctor said I would need it) But, I figure since it has been so long, that there is either a less invasive procedure or do they pretty much skip the rebuilding step and go right for the replacement?

It all depends on what's wrong with the knee. My wife is 50 years old and she was told by her Doctor that she needed a total knee replacement, so we started doing some research on it (see link below).

One of the problems is they only last so long, but they don't say how long they last. Then, when you go to have a second knee replacement the success rate drops quite a bit.

My wife went to see another Doctor, who had done work on her shoulders and he told her that she didn't need a knee replacment. All she needed was to have her knee cap moved over to where it belonged and he did something else, but I'm not sure what it is. She ended up having Arthroscopy surgery and it was done in day surgery.

knee replacement surgery has come a long way since 15 years ago. i totally understand you waiting since surgery isn't very fun. my g/f's mother just had one of her knees done and she was out of the hospital on her 3rd day post op. 1 week post op we drove by and she was walking around her drive way with a walker by herself. the only difficult part nonadays is the recovery. the physical therapy is painful but the outcome is worth it. once you heal up there is no more pain. good luck :o)
