This is because what you see in your system tray showing you are connected means that you are connected to another device or network (i.e., your router) it doesn't mean you have internet connectivity. Basically, that the wire is plugged in. That's it.

You may be connected to the router via network which will give you the online icon, but the router either isn't connected to the internet, or your computer isn't set up correctly for internet access.

because the router may be connected but the internet isn't feeding through the router. you need to check your cable modem and call your provider

If you are going wireless, you may want to make sure that your wireless pc card is on and activated. Regards.
