There was, and still is, an ethic in the music business that hard living is good publicity and sells music. So, those who produce and manage people don't help them personally or professionally. In the case of Hendrix and Joplin, they were disadvantaged kids with poor self images, and they abused drugs and alcohol as a way of deadening their feelings and building their self-confidence through drugs. I believe Joplin was an alcoholic, which is a disease and she needed treatment. The stress of touring is astronomical, and someone who is already feeling inadequate will give in the the culture of abuse that surrounds music people.
Morrison is another story. I believe he was a spoiled and immature fellow who believed he was an artist and a poet, and abusing one's body was a way of showing the world what a tortured and sensitive artist he was.
