My baby is 8 1/2 months old I have breastfed her the whole time and never could get her to take a bottle . she is eating baby food now and only breatfeeding 4 - 6 times a day I am worried that she is not getting enough liquids . I have tried sippys and bottles and she wont drink from them she will however chew on them . Is she getting enough liquid ? and should I give her bottles or sippys until she decides to drink from them . I really dont know what to do here so any advice would be great .

In response to Kelley D &th answer I think I know how you feel and I just wanted to see if you wanted to join my yahoo gruop for mothers . If so then go here

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mommasathome

I have not got around to asking the question in there yet but so far I have 16 other mothers there willing to help . I just started the group just the other day . I created it so that Mothers could meet other mothers to talk , have adult conversations , and to possibly get advice .

Try try again.... what are you giving in the sippy? If you have not tried it already, try pumping, and giving her breast milk to start. then you can move on to other things once she gets the hang of it. My son would never take a bottle either. When i first introduced him to a cup, i started with a little bit of water in a regular cup. "The experts(whoever they may be...) suggest starting with a regular cup, and then moving to a sippy when they get the mechanics of drinking from something other than the breast. that might be worth a try. then move on to the sippy, just to have a "cleaner" time when you are out.

Try a Rubbermaid "juice box" that uses a straw instead. My kids did better with those than with sippys. I think for a BF baby who didn't take bottles, something like a straw cup that you don't have to tip up to drink out of seems to work better. Also, you can give it a little squeeze when they are first learning to use it and squirt some of the liquid into their mouth to help them figure it out.

EDITED TO ADD:
I am NOT recommending that you give her JUICE. It's an empty bottle that you buy to drink out of. They just call it a "juice box" in the product description. See the link below. You can put breastmilk, water, formula, whatever in it.

I nursed 3. Two of my 3 I had a real hard time getting to take anything other the my milk. I had to experiment with bottles and nipples to get them to take them. Offer her juice and water in a bottle/cup. Also try putting your b-milk into which ever she prefers. You can also try rubbing the nipple/sippi cup on the area where she eats so it smells like you. She will drink it when she ready. She gets what she needs from you if you are allowing her to nurse on demand.
Good Luck

I am having the same problem, but with my five month old...she refuses anything but the breast. she did take a bottle when she was a few weeks old, we left it alone and when we tried it again months later she flat out refused. we have tried everything, my husband and mom have both tried, different niples/bottles/formula -- nothing works and i am starting to feel desperate, as i don't think she is getting enough each feeding with me and wants to nurse still very frequently(btw, she has started solids) and is not even close to sleeping through the night. i feel if she could get a formula dose before bed that would help, as it did my other child..ANY other opinions or advice would be helpful!!

Are you trying to wean her? If you were pumping and giving her a bottle or sippy cup, she will use it if she gets thirsty enough. (I weaned my sons off the breast cold turkey) If she is only chewing, and not fussing for a drink then she is probably getting enough liquid, especially if she is starting on baby food. The need for liquid diminishes when the baby food starts...how are her diapers? If she is not getting enough liquid, there would be no "pee" diapers.

This is a very common problem.. Basically babies who breast feed get used to the breast and become kinda spoiled to it. You shouldn't worry about it as eventually, you will wean your baby off your breast and onto the bottle, formula, or food, whatever you choose. I know its hard, and there will be crying but you have to stay strong and keep offering your choice of meals.. Eventually your baby will get the hint and understand mommy is saying no more boobie... Your being a good mom.. your baby will be fine... be strong!

Try giving her the magic cup from avent. If she chews on it it will still leak liquid in her mouth a little.
