You get a certain amount of credits for each class. Usually 1 per semester. To graduate in my school you have to have 41 credits. For an honors diploma you have to have like a 3.5 gpa or something along with 47 credits. If you flunk the class you do not get the credit.

You get a credit for taking a class. You need so many credits to graduate, and you need certain credits--for example 2 in math, 3 in English, etc.
